HCH Institute is proud to present our Parapsychological Studies Certificate Program. This program is approved for CE Units for MFTs, LCSWs and RNs. The individual courses and full program are available for distance learning. See the HCH website for current schedule and prices.

Parapsychological Studies, or the Study of Psychic Phenomena…Contrary to what so many believe, the field of Parapsychology studies much more than ghosts and hauntings. Parapsychologists are generally not very psychic (and psychics are rarely parapsychologists). Parapsychology is not “paranormal psychology.” So, what’s the field all about? Just who are the parapsychologists and what do they do?

This 60 hour course is an overview to the field of Parapsychology, and the main areas of research and investigation: ESP, PsychoKinesis (mind over matter), and Survival of Bodily Death. Included is  a general discussion of where the field came from, where the major centers of research are today, and where the field might be headed. Students have an opportunity to review some of the basic and current research in the field and to apply the theories and applications to their current helping profession or to pursue parapsychological field investigations on their own, or simply for their own enrichment. All courses may be taken individually.

If all seven courses are taken as a Certificate in Parapsychological Studies, the application, materials, and some texts are included in the tuition price of $1000.00.

The Certificate in Parapsychological Studies is a 60 course of study comprised of
seven separate courses. Course titles are:

Introduction to Parapsychology
PK & Precognition: Mind, Matter & Time
Being Psychic
The Search for Life After Death
Theories and Models of Psychic Experience: How It Might Work
Parapsychology: The Cross-Over Science
Ghost Hunting: How to Investigate the Paranormal

Instructor: Loyd Auerbach, MS

All recommended books can generally be found through online book dealers, unless otherwise noted.

Information on the Distance Learning program can be found after the course descriptions.  Distance learning is mainly audio-based, with live recordings of the classes combined with telephone or Skype appointments with the instructor. Classes are also available Live via Telephone for distance learners and those in the San Francisco Bay Area concerned about traffic! (see below).

Course Descriptions (see below for info on distance learning options):

Note that all students, local and distance, are provided with a CD/DVD disc with the recordings from a prior year’s course offering (in mp3), plus quite a lot of text materials in Word and PDF, and for some courses, additional audio and video files.

Individual courses are available without entering the program.

Introduction to Parapsychology: 3 hours: $30.  This lecture is an overview of and introduction to the terminology, concepts and history of the field of Parapsychology that will be used throughout the program. Please note that this is a prerequisite for the Certification courses and will be available generally only as an audio lecture with text materials.

However, students entering the program who already have a grounding in the basic terms and concepts of parapsychology may speak with the instructor and may skip the introductory session if they can demonstrate knowledge of the basics. This lecture is offered to avoid having to cover the foundation concepts in each separate course.

Additional audio material is included with the main lecture.

PK & Precognition: 15 hours Cost: $275. MIND , MATTER AND TIME: How Our Psychic Abilities Affect the World Around Us, Pierce the Veil of Time and Help Create the Future.

In this five week course, Loyd Auerbach will discuss two fascinating psychic abilities, Psychokinesis (mind over matter) and Precognition. In addition, he’ll delve into theories of Time and Space that connect Psychokinesis (PK) and Precognition. In relation to PK, he’ll delve into: what parapsychologists and many others know today about PK, how it manifests itself, and how it hints at the broader interconnectedness between our consciousnesses and the Universe around us.

There will be an experiential PK segment to this class, working with a method for PK developed by the late (great) science and science fiction writer Martin Caidin,, himself capable of PK. In other words, we include a PK workshop.

As for Precognition, Auerbach will cover questions such as:
Can anyone really predict the Future? How? Is there really a Future that can be predicted?
What is Time? Can we change the Future? Why do so many psychics miss on their predictions?

What about the premonitions of the average person?

Parapsychologists have evidence that precognition exists.
Research indicates that people can predict some future events, but not all.
Sometimes precognition works well, and sometimes not. Loyd Auerbach will discuss a variety of theories of Time and Timelines especially in the context of our apparent ability to predict the Future. He’ll cover the varied ways precognitive information pops up in our lives and some of the interesting research in Parapsychology. He’ll discuss conclusions reached by researchers about the nature of our ability to foretell the future.

Finally, there will be a focus on a conundrum in parapsychology: Do we predict the future or cause it to come into being with a little help from our PK? If the former, how do we use this information to shape our own personal Futures? If the latter, what does that say about our beliefs and expectations, and how all humanity consciously and unconsciously shapes the Future?

Recommended book:  MIND OVER MATTER by Loyd Auerbach (Kensington Books, 1994). Note: Currently out of print, this book is available from the author/instructor ( or via used book dealers on the internet. It will be available as an ebook in Spring, 2013.

Being Psychic: 12 hours Cost: $250. With an overview of how psychic abilities show up in people’s experiences the world over, this class/seminar focuses on the “informational” psychic abilities that have been called Extra-Sensory Perception: telepathy, clairvoyance and precognition. We’ll discuss how these abilities show up in people’s experiences, both those of the average person and the ostensibly more “talented” psychics.

With discussion of parapsychological research from the early days to the more recent remote viewing, ganzfeld, and staring studies, attendees will also learn the evolution of research methods in the laboratory, and what parapsychological researchers have discovered with regard to personality, physiological and belief variables.

We’ll discuss how these abilities are experienced and accepted or rejected in various cultures around the world, and the major part Belief plays in having and developing ESP .

We’ll also discuss the major debate in Parapsychology dealing with Survival (of Bodily Death) vs. Super-Psi as conceptual explanations for a variety of ghostly and after-death experiences.

Psychic development will be addressed and some techniques passed along. Basic philosophy behind “being psychic” will be discussed, as well as a primary focus on immense part that Belief plays.

We’ll also discuss the role telepathy and clairvoyance play in ghost encounters, hauntings and mediumship.

We’ll take some time to try a few more experiential situations.

We’ll conduct some clairvoyance and remote viewing “tests” as well as play a few telepathy and psychometry games based somewhat on the instructor’s experience of a TV game show that was in development for the Game Show Network in 2002 (that show currently in limbo, it seems).

Finally, there will be discussion of how to assess psychic readings and even the backgrounds of self-professed psychics, parapsychologists, and paranormal investigators.

Recommended books:

1) DISCOVERING YOUR PSYCHIC WORLD by Annette Martin (Artistic Visions, 1994). Available through, and from the instructor.

2) THE COMPLETE IDIOT’S GUIDE TO PSYCHIC INTUITION, 3rd Edition by Lynn A. Robinson, LaVonne Carlson-Finnerty and Katherine A. Gleason (Alpha, 2012).

Ghost Hunting: Investigating the Paranormal: 12 hours Cost: $250. Most people are interested in the paranormal phenomena we class as “ghostly”: Apparitions, Hauntings and Poltergeists. Many are interested in understanding their own experiences and the experiences of others. Many are intensely interested in gaining the skills and knowledge necessary to be an effective investigator of such things: a Ghost Hunter.

This class is a guide to ghost hunting, and attendees will gain the basic skills and understanding for investigation of ghosts, poltergeists, haunted places and related psychic experiences.

The class will include the models of what these things are (from the field of parapsychology), how the scientific and psychic approaches can mesh together, and how to assess a situation, investigate it, and resolve the case to the satisfaction of the people having the experiences (and hopefully to the satisfaction of the ghosts, when they’re involved).

You will learn about: Apparitions, hauntings and poltergeists: differences and similarities; What else can make a “ghost”? The investigative process, from initial call to resolution; Technology & Psychics in ghost hunting; How the techniques of the professionals differ from those of the amateurs; Psychic potential for investigators; The ethics of paranormal investigating; How his investigations have affected Auerbach’s own personal outlook on life. Naturally, the class will include some of Auerbach’s more exciting cases.

The recommended books are:

1)       GHOST HUNTING: HOW TO INVESTIGATE THE PARANORMAL by Loyd Auerbach (Ronin Publishing, 2004)

2)       HAUNTINGS & POLTERGEISTS: A GHOST HUNTER’S GUIDE by Loyd Auerbach (Ronin Publishing, 2004)

3) A PARANORMAL CASEBOOK: Ghost Hunting in the New Millennium by Loyd Auerbach (Atriad Press, 2005)

The Search for Life After Death: 9 hours Cost: $200. Do we survive the death of our bodies? Is there Life after Death? What is the evidence? This seminar will cover the search for evidence of Survival of Bodily Death from the earliest psychical researchers to parapsychologists of today. With an eye towards the evidence garnered and the research and investigations methods to gather it — the class covers topics such as ghosts, mediumship, near death experiences, electronic voice phenomena, out of body experiences, reincarnation and psychic experience says about whether we live on in some fashion after the deaths of our bodies.

Some time will also be spent discussing the recent research of Gary Schwartz, working with psychic mediums at the University of Arizona and the work of the Division of Personality Studies at the University of Virginia in Reincarnation and Apparition research.

The importance of ESP and PK in any model of Survival will be discussed.

The class will also look at the debate regarding evidence for Survival vs. the Super-Psi hypothesis from the perspective of the Survival proponents.

Recommended books:

1) IS THERE AN AFTERLIFE? A Comprehensive Overview of the Evidence, by David Fontana (Iff Books, 2005)

2) SCIENCE AND THE AFTERLIFE EXPERIENCE: Evidence for the Immortality of Consciousness, by Chris Carter (Inner Traditions, 2012)

Theories and Models of Psychic Experience: 6 hours Cost: $150. This short course covers basic models of how psychic abilities seem to work, what apparitions and hauntings are, and a survey of theories that might (or might not) explain it all. Also, covered, will be the current state-of-the-art of the research in parapsychology.

Recommended book: ENTANGLED MINDS by Dean Radin ((Paraview Pocket Books 2006)

Parapsychology: The Cross-Over Science: 6 hours Cost: $150. This short course covers how and why the field of Parapsychology pulls from so many other fields of Science.

With discussion of the connections to Social Science (particularly Psychology, Anthropology, and Sociology) and Physical Science (mainly Physics, with a touch of Cosmology), the class will look at how the knowledge base, research and investigation methods, theories, philosophy, and speculation have impacted how parapsychologists have conducted both their in-laboratory research and out of lab field investigations since the beginnings of the field in the 19th Century.

Currently, classes will generally be held on Thursday nights from 6:30 to 9:30 PM

Courses may be taken/purchased individually or all courses taken to fulfill the requirements for the Certificate in Parapsychological Studies. The application fee, tuition, and additional materials are all included in the tuition for the Certificate Program if paid all at one time. Otherwise, fees (very small) may be charged in addition to the individual course tuition.

The Certificate program or individual classes may be taken via a distance learning option. All courses have been audio-recorded, live. This includes lectures, discussion and questions/answers between students and the instructor.  In several instances, we’re supplying more than one recorded course run-through, as material shifts from year to year.

To participate in the distance learning option for the certification program, students pay full tuition and fees. Students receive all course materials on DVD-Rom (CD-Rom is available on request), which includes mp3 format of class audio, handouts, and additional materials.  Additional materials for some classes include video and additional audio.

Individual courses are available without entering the program.

For each course other than the Introduction, distance learning students are scheduled for telephone or Skype discussion time with the instructor. In this way, students will still be able to interact and ask questions of the instructor without having to be in the classroom, and the instructor can assess the student’s learning process.  Naturally, students may interact via email as well. Note that special arrangements might be in effect for international students.  Students will need to pay for their own calls to the instructor/school, and students are responsible for scheduling the session appointments or Skype can be used (discuss with the instructor).

Telephone time allotted for the courses is the following:

  1. Up to 2 hours: Ghost Hunting: How to Investigate the Paranormal
  2. Up to 1 hour:   The Search for Life After Death
  3. Up to 2 hours:  Being Psychic
  4. Up to 2 hours:  PK & Precognition: Mind, Matter & Time
  5. Up to 1 hour:   Theories and Models of Psychic Experience: How It Might Work
  6. Up to 1 hour:   Parapsychology: The Cross-Over Science

Note: No telephone time for the Intro course, and students who “attend” live classes via conference call can opt out of some/all of the telephone sessions other than a brief program completion phone conversation.

Distance learning students are invited to participate by conference call (via an in-classroom speakerphone) in the live class sessions as they are held at HCH (generally Thursday evenings from 6:30 – 9:30 PM Pacific time, though on occasion a course may be offered over a weekend).   This is not a requirement for certification however, nor is there any additional charge (other than your own phone bill).

Courses may be taken in any order (after the Introduction course, which students can opt-out of if they can demonstrate basic knowledge of the terminology/concepts of Parapsychology). Students may take as much (or as little) time as they need to finish each course.

For each certificate-related course, attending the additional telephone/Skype sessions and interacting with the instructor will ensure the material has been understood by the students. In other words, there’s no test per se.

Distance-learning students completing the entire program will be entitled to the same Certificate of Completion received by local students attending in-person.

Schedule of the classes as presented on-site in Lafayette, CA, can be found at

Note: No financial aid is currently available. Students needing to pay over time are encouraged to purchase courses separately, when they are able.

One more thing, to be clear: There are currently no recognized “certifications” in Parapsychology. This program offers a certificate of completion (like a sort of diploma) and further contacts/entry into the field. For a “certification” to hold any weight at all in the field, it would have to be approved/overseen by the Parapsychological Association, and have some academic weight behind it. HCH Institute’s courses are non-academic.

If someone is offering a “certification,” be sure to question them about their credentials, and check them and the course/program with the Parapsychological Association, the Rhine Research Center, or the Society for Psychical Research.

He is the third author on an important book, released in August, 2014:  ESP WARS, EAST AND WEST: An Account of the Military Use of Psychic Espionage as Narrated by the Key Russian and American Players, with Dr. Edwin C. May (who ran the US program for many years) and Dr. Victor Rubel.

He is President of the Forever Family Foundation, on the Board of Directors of the Rhine Research Center, the scientific advisory boards of the Forever Family Foundation and the Windbridge Institute, and is a member of the Parapsychological Association and the Society for Scientific Exploration. January 2013, he started his two year term as President of the Forever Family Foundation, to which he’s been re-elected (through 2016).

In 2010, he was appointed to the faculty of Atlantic University (Virginia Beach, VA).  He is currently teaching an online parapsychology course there. He is an Adjunct Professor at JFK University and is on the faculty of the Rhine Education Center.

He holds a degree in Cultural Anthropology from Northwestern University and a graduate degree in Parapsychology from JFK University.

He has worked as a consultant on the paranormal for organizations in the field of Parapsychology, as well as for a variety of media.  For the latter, he has consulted on a number of TV series and shows, including the Travel Channel’s “America’s Most Haunted Places,” and has been involved in pilot-productions for major production companies.

He is the author of several books and audio CDs. His most recent books  are hESP WARS: East & West (co-authored with Edwin C. May and Victor Rubel), The Ghost Detectives’ Guide to Haunted San Francisco (co-authored with Annette Martin, Craven Street Books, 2012),  A Paranormal Casebook: Ghost Hunting in the New Millennium (Atriad Press, 2005), and two from Ronin Publishing in 2004, Ghost Hunting:  How to Investigate the Paranormal and Hauntings and Poltergeists:  The Ghost Hunter’s Guide.

His first book, ESP, HAUNTINGS AND POLTERGEISTS: A Parapsychologist’s Handbook was named the “Sacred Text” on Ghosts by NEWSWEEK in 1996.  He was co-producer for and appears on camera in the video documentary The Haunting of the USS Hornet.

He is a professional speaker on the college circuit, with his lecture True Tales of Ghosts and Hauntings.  In addition, he lectures and teaches on a variety of other paranormally related topics.  Of special interest to ghost hunters is his lecture What Ghost Hunters Should Know About Parapsychology.

He is a professional mentalist and psychic entertainer, performing as Professor Paranormal — a title that follows him into his more serious work. He has been a member of the international organization the Psychic Entertainers Association since 1997, was President from 2001-2005, on the Board of Directors from 2006-2012, and is currently serving as their annual meeting planner.  Between 1982 and 1992, he performed mainly as a magician.  He has often been called on as a consultant to researchers with respect to possible psychic fraud and how to control against it.

Loyd Auerbach’s media appearances number in the thousands, with well over 100 national and local TV shows, and many hundreds of radio shows, including ESPN’s SportsCenter, The View, Hotel: Impossible, William Shatner’s Weird or What?, Criss Angel: Mindfreak, Larry King Live, Ghost Stories, Ghost Adventures, In Search Of, Unsolved Mysteries, The Today Show, OPRAH, Sightings, Popular Mechanics for Kids, Coast to Coast, and Late Night with David Letterman..  He is constantly haunting occasional new shows and many re-runs on Bio, the Travel Channel, A&E, the History Channel, the Discovery Channel, and TLC.  He is featured in and was Series Consultant for the Travel Channel mini-series “America’s Most Haunted Places.”

His familiarity with TV and Film is so extensive, he offers consultation with script-writers, story editors, producers and others for both scripted shows/films and reality television programming, and has been consulted on numerous projects (produced and unproduced) since the 1980s.

He is also a professional Chocolatier, having earned a certificate from the school Ecole Chocolat, and started a small artisan chocolate business called Haunted By Chocolate in late 2010, and conducts guided chocolate tastings for events and corporate/business meetings and private parties  – a book on chocolate will be available in 2013. Visit for info about that part of his life.

If that’s not enough, he’s been an occasional public speaking and media skills coach for authors, entrepreneurs and corporate executives. He’s taught the subjects since the late 1980s at JFK University, worked with speaker-seminar/training provider SpeakersWorld, and is featured as an “expert” in Public Speaking for Dummies by Malcolm Kushner (IDG Books, 1999; John Wiley & Sons 2004), and was Technical Editor for the last two editions of that book. He is launching his new speaker coaching & seminar business, “Speak As Youself,” officially on January 1, 2015. [Note: intrigued already? The temp site for the business is currently at]
